Pre-Care Tattoo Advice
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment to keep your skin hydrated.
This is particularly important if you are having “realism” style tattoos, also moisturise daily two weeks prior to your realism tattoo and up until the day before your appointment.
Avoid Alcohol
Refrain from drinking alcohol at least 24 hours before your session, as it can thin your blood and increase bleeding.
Get Plenty of Rest
Ensure you’re well-rested before your tattoo appointment; fatigue can make the experience more uncomfortable.
Eat a Good Meal
Your blood sugar level will drop when having your tattoo as your body will be under stress so have a substantial meal before your appointment to maintain your energy levels and help with pain tolerance.
Wear Comfortable Clothing
Dress in loose-fitting clothes that allow easy access to the area being tattooed.
Limit Caffeine
Try to reduce caffeine intake on the day of your tattoo, as it can heighten anxiety and make you more jittery.
Consult Your Artist
Let your artist know if it’s your first tattoo and discuss any concerns or questions with your tattoo artist beforehand to ensure you’re on the same page regarding the design and placement.
Avoid Sun Exposure
Steer clear of excessive sun exposure or tanning in the days leading up to your appointment to prevent skin irritation. We cannot tattoo burnt skin!
By following these pre-care tips, you’ll help set the stage for a smoother tattoo experience!
Tattoo Aftercare
Initial Care
Keep It Wrapped
If your tattoo is wrapped in Dermalize, leave it on for at least 24 hours, or how your artist has advised. If wrapped in clingfilm, remove it after 2-4 hours.
First Wash
After removing the wrap, gently wash your tattoo with non-perfumed soap and lukewarm water. Use your hands—avoid washcloths.
Pat Dry
Carefully pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel. Do not rub.
Moisturize
Apply a thin layer of the recommended tattoo ointment/moisturiser your artist has suggested (like Tattoo Aftercare Co. or Biotat). Do not use Vaseline or other barrier type creams!
Do’s
Do keep the tattoo clean and dry.
Do apply moisturizer 2-3 times a day for the first week.
Do wear loose clothing over the tattoo to avoid irritation.
Do stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet to support healing.
Don’ts
Don’t soak the tattoo in water (no baths, swimming pools, or hot tubs) for at least 2 weeks.
Don’t pick or scratch at scabs; let them fall off naturally.
Don’t expose your tattoo to direct sunlight for at least 2-3 weeks.
Don’t apply any products that contain alcohol or strong fragrances.
Follow-Up Care
Continue to moisturize until the tattoo is fully healed, typically about 2-4 weeks.
If you notice any signs of infection (excessive redness, swelling, burning or discharge, or your skin resembles Rice Crispies ), contact your tattoo artist or a medical professional.
By following these aftercare guidelines, you’ll help ensure your tattoo heals beautifully!
